Counterintuitive, and it's the thing worth understanding.
A fault that's constant is stable. Something has broken completely — no current flows through it, nothing is heating, and it will be exactly the same tomorrow.
A fault that's intermittent means the connection is still partly there. Current is squeezing through a loose or corroded contact, and everything that doesn't get through comes out as heat at that exact point. It works. It even works most of the time. And it's getting hot whenever it's used.

Load-related, and reporting something. A bulb dying flickers randomly and independently.
Worn contacts.
Detecting something that isn't present continuously.
Damp, temperature, and expansion all affect marginal connections.
A fault that isn't happening can't be measured. It has to be reproduced — by loading the circuit, working through devices, or recreating the conditions. That's genuinely slower than tracing a clean break, and it's why two similar-sounding jobs price differently.
It's the fault that's actively deteriorating, and it's generating heat while it does.
